HUNTING ON CAMP PROPERTY

All 2009-10 Permits Have Been Issued. Please Check Back in May 2010 For An Application.

Hunting, fishing, and other outdoor sports have been a long-standing tradition at Camp Bashore. Hunting is a sport which often sparks debate and can be equally argued on merits and benefits as well as risks and liabilities. As Scouts, we do our utmost to be good stewards of all our natural resources, and can see how hunting can help accomplish that. However, one of our primary concerns is to ensure the safety of the Scouts and Leaders who camp here, as well as our neighbors on adjoining properties.

Over the past decade, the population surrounding our property has increased significantly. Many new homes have been built, and much of our property now borders on occupied land. There is great concern for the safety of our Scouts as well as neighboring families, especially during seasons where high-powered rifles are used.  While most of the hunters who use Camp Bashore are considered to be both good sportsmen and good marksmen, there have been several instances of unsportsmanlike conduct, trespassing, and vandalism to camp property which puts everyone at risk.

Nationally, many local Scout Councils have chosen to eliminate hunting in their camps altogether. Each camp has a unique situation, tradition, laws, locality, terrain, and population, and each must be evaluated individually.  The Pennsylvania Dutch Council's Risk Management Committee recently reviewed the hunting policies at Camp Bashore, and the following rules have been enacted, effective immediately:

bulletAny person wishing to hunt at Camp Bashore must fill out an application and receive a permit from the Camp Ranger.  There is no charge for this permit, however there will be a limited number issued to guard against overcrowding.
bulletHunters may only use a Bow or a Shotgun. Rifles and Pistols are no longer permitted.
bulletAll Hunters are required to "Sign In" at the parking lot Welcome Center upon arrival, and "Sign-Out" before leaving.
bulletSeveral "Safety Zones" have been established where no hunting will be permitted.
bulletNo hunting permitted within 150 yards of buildings or structures.
bulletPlease see the Camp Ranger for clarification.
bulletHunting is allowed on weekdays providing no Scouting events or camp rentals are scheduled.  As in the past, hunting on weekends is prohibited, except during Antlered Deer season (2 weeks following Thanksgiving).

During the course of the 2009-2010 hunting season, discussion and evaluation of these rules and procedures will be ongoing. Please direct any questions, comments or suggestions to Dave Matterness, Camp Ranger or Karl Ziegenfus, Assistant Scout Executive.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we endeavor to make Camp Bashore safer for everyone.
