TRAILBLAZER PROGRAM
Formerly known as the
“Venturing / Older Boy” program, this program has changed and evolved to meet
the needs of the older Scouts and their leaders while in camp. This is a custom
tailored program to appeal to the older Scout who is no longer looking for a
summer camp experience of primarily earning merit badges. He is an experienced
outdoorsman, likes to hike, camp, and get wet. He is interested in trying out
new skills, or perhaps testing his limits. He must be at least 14 years of age,
be at least 1st Class rank, and be able to pass the Swimmer’s test if
participating in any Aquatics programs.
The program affords
opportunities for off-camp adventure as well as special in-house programs that
appeal to that age group. We will do our best to accommodate each person's
requests, but we reserve the right to limit some activities due to low interest.
Provisional campers with flexible summer plans may benefit the most from this
option.
The extra activity fees
(when necessary) have been held to a minimum in order to make this program
available to as many Scouts as possible. Of course, if there is an
activity that either does not appeal, or cannot be afforded, a Scout is able to
choose from a list of alternate activities.
Off-Camp activities will
require help from leaders for supervision and transportation assistance. If you
have boys in this program, you may need to provide transportation to at least
the number of boys from your unit who are participating in the activity. In
exchange for this help, unit leaders may participate “free of charge” in those
activities having a fee.

You'll need to fill out this form to sign your Scouts up for the
program:
Below
you will find descriptions of some of the various activities we have scheduled
2008!
 |
Mountain Boarding:
If you were not at the last National Scout Jamboree, then you may not have
heard about this relatively new sport. It's kind of like snowboarding down a
mountain without snow. Your board has oversized tires, and you can control
your speed with a handbrake. We have adapted some of the mountainous areas of
camp to introduce this new program to Trailblazers. Each participant must
attend a mandatory safety course, and agree to wear all provided safety
equipment. |
 |
Susquehanna River Float
Trip- your choice of Canoe or Kayak to cruise on the river. Leave in
the morning and have lunch on the river, arrive back in camp in time for
supper. You MUST pass the BSA Swimmer's certification, and preferably have
Canoeing MB, Kayaking BSA, or similar experience. A shakedown will occur prior
to the outing to get a sense of skill levels of participants. |
 |
Overnight Horseback
Trail Ride- You'll get to ride thru the various trails in camp on your
way to the Outpost where you'll camp like a true cowboy. Dinner over an open
fire, sleeping under the stars, and experiences like no other. Prior
horsemanship experience suggested. |
 |
Night Climbing:
Trailblazer participants will have exclusive use of the new indoor climbing
wall after normal program hours are over- up until 10:30pm, complete with a
crackerbarrel. |
 |
3-D Archery Challenge:
Be the first group each week to check out the 3-D Archery Course, complete
with a multitude of realistic animal targets. Other possibilities
include a good ole’ fashioned stump shoot- stalking the woods with a
traditional bow and rubber-tipped blunted arrows looking for much smaller
targets such as rubber rats and rubber rocks concealed throughout the range. |
 |
Pitch and Putt Golf:
The Sixth Annual Bashore Scout Reservation Golf Outing will once again
prove to be an exciting adventure. With a new format for the season,
things should prove to be both exciting and challenging on the links.
Aim for par as you enjoy a round with friends. Small fee of $5 to participate. |
 |
Bike Hike:
Explore the Swatara State Park's abandoned highway roads on your bicycle.
There will be some special activities along the way, following clues and
compass bearings. Participants are required to bring their own bike and helmet
for this activity. (The camp has a limited number of bikes available if
needed.) Have your own bikes inspected and tuned prior to bringing it to camp. |
 |
Anchor Hike:
You are not a full member of the Bashore Trailblazer experience until you have
gazed down upon camp from atop the Anchor, a rock formation on our neighboring
mountain the lies roughly in the shape of a Navy anchor. Not only is
this a great hike for the spectacular view, but also a frequent opportunity to
spy various critters not often seen in camp. |
